ADS 185 - TESOL Methods: Classroom & Curriculum This course is designed to prepare students to design and deliver ESL or EFL instruction that targets specific needs. Topics include instructional design, instructional technology,assessment, support for diverse learners, and administrative matters in TESOL. Students must register concurrently for ADS 187: TESOL Practicum II.
Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. design lesson, unit, and course plans for teaching core English language skills;
2. use a wide range of instructional methods and techniques in English language teaching;
3. design instructional activities that incorporate culture and technology into English
language teaching and learning;
4. evaluate, select, and adapt instructional materials for varied learner levels and
profiles;
5. design assessments appropriate for various purposes in English language instruction;
6. demonstrate an understanding of best practices in providing student feedback;
7. differentiate instruction for multiple levels/needs;
8. develop strategies to promote learners’ autonomy and skill development;
9. apply core principles of teaching pronunciation;
10. explain approaches for working with content instructors to develop materials and
activities for English language learners;
11. formulate strategies to address effective and administrative needs in instruction; and
12. discuss the role of professional development for ESL instructors.
