Emergency Medical Responder

Program Description


This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to begin assessment and care for injured or ill patients. Major topics covered in this course are: introduction to the EMS system; legal aspects of care, equipment, tools, and supplies; general anatomy and patient assessment; respiratory system, resuscitation, and CPR; aids to resuscitation and oxygen administration; management of bleeding, shock, and soft tissue injuries; management of fractures and spinal injuries; environmental emergencies and care of burns; care of special patients (including obstetric, pediatric, and elderly); and special incidents (including triage, water accidents, and gaining access to and moving patients).​

Program Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this Continuing Education Workforce Certificate, students will be able to:

  1. Provide knowledge and skills necessary to begin immediate lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS resources to arrive;
  2. identify life-threatening conditions in medical and trauma emergencies; and
  3. formulate patient treatment plans based on patient assessments, complaints, and medical direction standing orders in all patient populations and chief complaints.

Program Credentials


Students will be awarded a Continuing Education Workforce Certificate and have access to a Continuing Education academic record (transcript).

Financial Aid and Payment Options


CCBC currently offers Continuing Education (CE) financial aid to those who qualify. We package public and private funding options to benefit students which include COVID-19 relief funding, the Maryland Sequence Scholarship, CCBC Opportunity Grant funding, Maryland Promise, and Baltimore County College Promise. Financial aid funding is available for select CE courses and programs. 

Additional opportunities for financial support include partial payment options through Nelnet Business Solutions and tuition waivers for those who qualify. Resources outside of CCBC may also be available through employer/sponsor paid tuition,  the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), and your local office of workforce development.

To apply, go to www.ccbcmd.edu/apply and complete the CCBC Non-Credit Workforce Certificate application.  An email will then be sent with program information and any additional requirements necessary to apply for the program.

Career Opportunities

Emergency medical responder (EMR) are an integral part of the emergency medical services team. Students can work as an EMR as a part of an ambulance transportation service and mobile integrated healthcare services.​
