Program Description
Freight broker training will help students learn the skills needed to be a successful Freight Broker/Agent. From licensing and operations, to sales and marketing, students learn the basics of how to run a domestic freight brokerage or agency in the United States.
Freight agent or brokers connect shippers and manufacturers with transportation companies and manage those shipments. Topics include transportation law, contracts, and insurance, to setting up and running a business.
Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this Continuing Education Workforce Certificate, students will be able to:
1. discuss concepts related to shipping packets, carrier packets, operations, types of freight, transportation law, contracts, insurance, record keeping, and accounting;
2. identify how to set up your business, write quotations, market your services, and negotiate sales; and
3. prepare to start a business and set up an office as freight broker.
Program Credential
Students will receive a Continuing Education Workforce Certificate, and have access to a Continuing Education academic record (transcript).
The freight broker course will provide you with the requirements and resources needed to obtain a brokerage licensing/authority from the federal government (additional fees and paperwork are required from the government for brokerage but not if you become a freight agent).
Financial Aid and Payment Options
CCBC currently offers Continuing Education (CE) financial aid to those who qualify. We package public and private funding options to benefit students which include COVID-19 relief funding, the Maryland Sequence Scholarship, CCBC Opportunity Grant funding, Maryland Promise, and Baltimore County College Promise. Financial aid funding is available for select CE courses and programs.
Additional opportunities for financial support include partial payment options through Nelnet Business Solutions and tuition waivers for those who qualify. Resources outside of CCBC may also be available through employer/sponsor paid tuition, the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), and your local office of workforce development.

Approximately 180 hours/6 months to complete

Computer requirements:
- PC: Windows XP or later / Mac: OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later.
- Browser: The latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox are preferred. Microsoft Edge and Safari are also compatible.
- Software must be installed and fully operational before the course begins.
- Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Acrobat Reader
Application Process
To apply, go to www.ccbcmd.edu/apply and complete the CCBC Continuing Education Workforce Certificate program application. An email will then be sent with program information and any additional requirements necessary to apply for the program.
Open Entry – No screening or documentation required.

Skills for Success:
Since this course is delivered completely online, students will need to have the self discipline to complete all required material on their own. A course instructor will be available to assist students with questions and to lead online activities during the course of the class.
