Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT)

Program Description

Prepare for an entry-level position in the apartment and related facilities maintenance industry. In this series of courses, students learn about the apartment business, electrical, appliance maintenance and repair, HVAC, plumbing, and maintenance and repair of the interior and exterior of apartment properties. These skills are used in a wide variety of apartment, building, and facilities maintenance and repair careers. CAMT includes 100 hours of training, leading to an Apartment Maintenance Technician Continuing Education Workforce Development Certificate. Graduates will receive a letter and provisional certificate from the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) and will be eligible for a certificate from NAAEI upon completion of one year of field work. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 Type I testing is also included.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this Continuing Education Workforce Certificate, students will be able to:

1. prepare to pass the EPA 608 (refrigerant) CORE/Type I exam and the National Apartment Association CAMT exam;

2. perform basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, appliance, and HVAC maintenance tasks associated with apartments, multifamily housing, and similar facilities; and

3. demonstrate effective skills to work as an entry-level apartment maintenance technician.

Program Credentials

CCBC Credential:

Students will receive a Continuing Education Workforce Certificate, and have access to a Continuing Education academic record (transcript). Completers will receive a letter and provisional certificate from the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) and will be eligible for a certificate from NAAEI upon completion of one year of field work. Students who pass the EPA 608 Type I test will receive certification from the EPA.

Financial Aid and Payment Options

CCBC currently offers Continuing Education (CE) financial aid to those who qualify. We package public and private funding options to benefit students which include COVID-19 relief funding, the Maryland Sequence Scholarship, CCBC Opportunity Grant funding, Maryland Promise, and Baltimore County College Promise. Financial aid funding is available for select CE courses and programs. 

Additional opportunities for financial support include partial payment options through Nelnet Business Solutions and tuition waivers for those who qualify. Resources outside of CCBC may also be available through employer/sponsor paid tuition,  the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), and your local office of workforce development.

Program Length

4 weeks of intensive daytime training (M-F) or 9 weeks of part-time evening/weekend training 

Start dates vary.  Courses are offered at CCBC Randallstown and CCBC Dundalk.

Program Requirements

GED/High School diploma. Minimum age of 18.

These courses have some online curriculum content, so students should have basic computer and keyboard skills. There will be time in class on a provided computer for the online activities.

To apply, go to www.ccbcmd.edu/apply and complete the CCBC Non-Credit Workforce Training Certificate application.  An email will then be sent with program information and any additional requirements necessary to apply for the program.

Open Entry – No screening or documentation required.

This program has no options for obtaining course waiver(s) for prior learning.

Career Opportunities:

​Maintenance technicians can take further classes and specialize in fields such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and boiler operation. With experience, technicians can become lead technicians or supervisors. They may also transition into related fields such as equipment sales representatives, property managers, and leasing agents.
