Semester Sequence

This certificate is designed to be taken as a one-semester workforce development program. However, students who are not part of a workforce development cohort may take these courses in different semesters and still work towards the Basic Horticulture Technician Certificate.

*Credit students who are new to college (no successfully completed transferable college credits from other institutions) are required to take ACDV 101 - Academic Development: Transitioning to College . This 1-credit course is designed to be taken in the first semester at CCBC. Students must provide an official transcript(s) from an accredited institution to document successful completion of college coursework for the ACDV 101 requirement to be waived.

Program Description

This certificate is for individuals interested in obtaining an entry-level position with either a landscaping firm or a nursery as a technician. The focus of the program is to build skills in sustainable practices; plant identification; soil assessment and testing; pest maintenance; and landscape construction, installation, and maintenance. The cooperative work experience helps students determine if they are interested in the field and allows them to demonstrate their interest, work ethic, and abilities to potential employers. At the end of the program, students will be offered an interview with participating industry leaders for potential employment and will have an industry reference from their cooperative experience.

This certificate is a stackable credential. Students who complete this certificate program can apply these credits toward earning an A.A.S. degree in Sustainable Horticulture.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

apply basic skills for the horticulture employment sector;
identify plants;
assess and test soil for pest management;
install and maintain landscaped areas; and
qualify for an entry-level position as a landscape technician or nursery worker.
