Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Certificate

*Clinical Practicum I, II, and II may be waived if the student chooses to set clinical on his/her own.

Students are not required to take ACDV 101  at CCBC since admission into the MRI program requires one to be a licensed, registered radiographer by the ARRT and the State of Maryland.

Program Outcomes:


Upon successful completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

  1. use critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  2. produce detailed cross sectional images that can be used to diagnose diseases and disorders; and
  3. demonstrate the skills necessary to perform as an entry-level Magnetic Resonance Imaging technologist.

Program Description:


The Magnetic Resonance Imaging program is designed to provide the working Radiologic Technologist with the theoretical background and documented clinical experience necessary to sit for the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) registry examination offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The certificate is based on the curriculum suggested by the American Society for Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and the clinical standards required by the ARRT. Required didactic components will be offered as well as elective clinical components based on student need. The didactic component of the curriculum will be delivered both on-line using Blackboard and in a classroom setting with lectures and discussion. The clinical component will be gained in an array of clinical affiliates.

Admission to this program is a separate process from admission to the college. Admission to the School of Health Professions programs is competitive and selective and is based on published criteria. Information about admissions processes for the programs in the School of Health Professions and the Selective Admissions Application forms are available through the student’s SIMON account or by calling the School of Health Profession’s Admissions office at 443-840-2810. This information is also available in the Admissions or Registrar’s office on each campus.

School of Health Professions Policies:


Students in the School of Health Professions are expected to conduct themselves according to an honor code, exhibit professional behavior, communicate effectively in English, provide proof of health insurance and immunizations, and will be required to submit to a criminal background check and must submit to random urine drug testing. Students are expected to incur costs associated with these requirements.

For students who wish to pursue an A.A.S. degree in Radiography  or the Certificate in Computed Tomography (CT)  please refer to the specific programs.

Admission


This 9-month program is offered once a year in the fall with a limited number of openings. Applicants should submit all required information within the appropriate time frames listed on the Admissions Checklist. If there are more qualified applicants than openings, a blind lottery may be held for admissions. Those in the blind lottery who are not offered a space in the program will acquire more points for admission into the next course. Clinical rotations in MRI will be offered to those that need them. However, we cannot guarantee that all students will acquire compentency in every clinical procedure within the 9-month program timeframe. Students are highly encouraged to acquire needed clinical competencies on their own time, such as on the job, if possible. Students may even document clinical procedures prior to or while in the admissions process.

Please see the ARRT guidelines for clinical competency in MRI. The ARRT MRI clinical information can be found on www.arrt.org. All clinical competencies must be within 24 months of taking the ARRT exam in MRI. Students must complete the application process for admission to the Community College of Baltimore County, if not already a CCBC student. In addition, students must submit the Selective Admissions application and other documents as listed on the enclosed checklist. All students must be licensed, registered radiographers by the ARRT and by the State of Maryland. In addition, every student will submit to a criminal background check before starting clinical rotations. All students will carry personal health insurance and will be up to date on all immunizations, CPR, and basic mandatory medical educational units.
