• GEOA 210 - Decision Making Using Geographic Information Systems 4 Credits.
• GEOA 250 - Advanced Geospatial Applications 3 Credits.
• GEOG 101 - Introduction to Physical Geography 3 Credits.
• ENGL 101 - College Composition I 3 Credits.
• GEOA 181 - Cooperative Education: Geospatial Applications 1 Credits.
• GEOA 182 - Cooperative Educations: Geospatial Applications 2 Credits.
• GEOA 183 - Cooperative Education: Geospatial Applications 3 Credits.

Total Number of Credits Required for Certificate: 24-26*

*A new college orientation requirement, completion of the one-credit ACDV 101  course, Transitioning to College, went into effect spring 2010. If you are a credit student who is new to college (meaning you have not successfully completed college coursework at another institution(s)), you are required to take ACDV 101  during your first semester at CCBC, thereby increasing the number of credits required for the certificate to 25-27 credits. Students are required to provide an official transcript(s) to document successful completion of college coursework at another institution(s) in order for this requirement to be waived.

Program Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

1. practice the principles of geospatial applications through laboratory experience, client-based projects, internships and additional outside of class activities and discussions;
2. determine how GIS can be used to visualize data in other disciplines (e.g., commerce, disaster management and response, politics, homeland security, planning and education, crime, etc.);
3. evaluate spatial information gathered for timeliness, authority, accuracy, validity and completeness; and
4. prepare maps using GIS and remote sensing software to visually represent data and apply appropriate tools for spatial analysis.

Program Description:

This certificate provides comprehensive instruction in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), photogrammetry and remote sensing, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Geospatial techniques are used to aid in decision making in fields as diverse as business, marketing, homeland security, public policy, environment, engineering, public health, archeology, and criminal justice by identifying patterns between graphical information (maps) and data. The certificate option focuses on core courses and immediate employment in the field.
