CHA 212 - Biology and Disease for Veterinary Assistants


4.2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to teach the student with special needs the concepts and applications of anatomy, physiology, pathology and parasitology for the veterinary assistant profession. Topics to be covered include: basic cytology, anatomy, physiology, disease transmission, control and prevention, ectoparasites and endoparasites.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of physical examination protocols and procedures;
2. identify, define and describe the major anatomical structures of animal cells;
3. identify, define and describe the major anatomical body structures of various animal species;
4. describe the function of the major anatomical body structures of various animal species;
5. demonstrate an understanding of and proper use of common veterinary medical terminology;
6. demonstrate an understanding of common diseases affecting animals;
7. identify common zoonotic diseases;
8. demonstrate an understanding of vaccines, their function, proper handling, and administration;
9. identify common parasites and describe parasite prevention and treatment; and
10. prepare and examine fecal samples and heartworm samples for laboratory examination.
