CHA 209 - Introduction to Veterinary Assisting


2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to give the student, who has special needs, to learn what they need to know about the veterinary profession in order to be a veterinary assistant. Topics to be covered include: the various roles and careers in the veterinary profession, veterinary and medical laws, small animal breeds, exam room procedures, outpatient care, and animal handling and restraint.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. describe the roles and responsibilities of the members of the veterinary team;
2. identify accurately common small animal breeds;
3. demonstrate an understanding of industry standard triage protocols;
4. distinguish between emergency and non-emergency patients from verbal descriptions;
5. identify the basic laws and agencies affecting veterinary practice;
6. demonstrate an understanding of proper exam room procedures and hospital protocols;
7. demonstrate an understanding of basic animal body language, psychology and behavior; and
8. describe, identify and demonstrate proper animal handling, restraint techniques and restraint equipment.
