The Allied Health A.A.S. degree permits students who have achieved national certificates in the health fields of surgical technology, sleep technology, pharmacy technician, and medical coding an avenue to receive both credit for prior learning and an associate’s degree.

This degree program is intended for students who have achieved national certificates in the health fields of surgical technology, sleep technology, pharmacy technician, and medical coding.

Opportunities for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) - This degree provides articulation of credits based on prior learning assessment that is verified through completion of a national certification as noted above.  Several General Education classes offer PLA. See Portfolio, Departmental Exam, CLEP, DSST, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate.

Articulation and Transfer Agreements - While there are no program-specific agreements, see other types of agreements such as guaranteed admission, block transfer, and discounts.

Program Requirements and Electives - 42 Credits


Program Electives:


Select credits from the following list of electives to attain 60 credits for the degree. The number of elective credits depends on the certificate program for which Prior Learning Assessment is awarded. Therefore, the number of Occupational Specific Theory and Practicum credits required depends on the length of the certificate program.

Electives needed beyond this list can include any courses with ALHL, ACCT, BIOL, CHEM, or MNGT course prefixes. Other courses may be taken with permission of the program director. Students should work with the program director to select electives.

Note


*Credit students who are new to college (no successfully completed transferable college credits from other institutions) are required to take ACDV 101 - Academic Development: Transitioning to College . This 1-credit course is designed to be taken in the first semester at CCBC. Students must provide an official transcript(s) from an accredited institution to document successful completion of college coursework for the ACDV 101 requirement to be waived.

 

Program Description


The Allied Health A.A.S. degree provides an option for stackable credentials permitting upward mobility.  The degree permits students who have achieved national certificates in the health fields of surgical technology, sleep technology, pharmacy technician, and medical coding an avenue to receive both credit for prior learning and an associate’s degree with no duplication of prior learning content.  Additional course work will be completed in the areas of management, leadership, communications, and customer service.  These additional courses prepare graduates for expanded roles in leadership.

School of Health Professions Policies


Students in the School of Health Professions are expected to conduct themselves according to an honor code; exhibit professional behavior; communicate effectively in English; provide proof of health insurance, immunizations, and a tuberculosis (TB) test; and submit to a criminal background check and drug testing. Students are expected to pay the costs associated with these requirements.

Program Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  2. demonstrate critical thinking skills in relation to prioritizing, analyzing, and resolving issues in health care;
