VOB 150 - HVAC II: Basics of HVAC Electricity and Heating Systems

10 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to enable the student to learn AC & DC circuit fundamentals, wiring principles, and use of the National Electrical Code (NEC) book. The course also covers the basic principles of heating and heating systems focusing on gas and oil-fired warm air furnaces. Topics to be covered include: the purpose and use of the NEC codebook; commercial and residential wiring and basic wiring in construction; the three methods of heat transfer; fuel used in heating; forced air furnaces; monitoring and measuring manifold pressure on a gas furnace; and major components of gas, oil, and electric furnaces and heat pumps.

Upon completion of this program, students should be able to:

1. demonstrate basic wiring principles;
2. discuss the differences and similarities in commerical, industrial, and residential wiring;
3. use the National Electric Code book for code look-up;
4. explain the three methods by which heat is transferred;
5. identify the types of fuels used in heating;
6. identify the major components of gas and oil furnaces describing how each performs;
7. use a manometer to measure and adjust manifold pressures of a gas furnace (with supervision);
8. describe how an electric furnace operates; and
9. perform basic furnace preventative maintenance procedures.
