VOB 164 - Career Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) This course is designed to enable the student to learn safety, material and equipment setup, and basic techniques for oxy-fuel, gas metal arc (MIG), gas tungsten arc (TIG), and shielded metal arc (Stick) welding. Students will also explore basic metallurgy, welding codes, inspection, and symbols. Students will then advance their skills in the Gas Tungsten Arc (TIG) process. Emphasis will be placed on the student’s ability to prepare material and perform welding of flat, horizontal and vertical fillet welds and flat groove welds in carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum. Practice is geared towards AWS D17.1 Fusion Welding for Aerospace Application. Topics to be covered include welding safety, cutting operations, operating oxy-fuel and cutting equipment, basic welding symbols and codes, common alloy metallurgy, material and machine setup, welding inspection methods, horizontal and vertical fillet welds, and flat and vertical groove welds.
Course Objectives:
1. understand and practice safety in all aspects of welding and cutting operations;
2. set-up and operate Oxy-Fuel equipment to perform groove and fillet welds in the flat and horizontal positions;
3. perform cutting of steel, aluminum and stainless steel with Oxy-Fuel and Plasma cutting equipment;
4. perform groove and fillets welds on carbon steel in the flat and horizontal positions with: MIG, TIG, and Stick welding;
5. read and interpret basic welding symbols and understanding welding codes;
6. understand the basics of Visual, Dye Penetrant, Mag Particle, Ultrasonic and Radiographic welding inspection methods;
7. understand the metallurgy of common alloys;
8. perform safety inspection of equipment and accessories;
9. set up and prepare material for TIG welding and adjust machine to correct polarity and amperage setting;
10. make horizontal fillet welds on carbon steel and horizontal and vertical fillet welds on stainless steel and aluminum;
11. make flat & vertical groove welds on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum; and
12. perform AWS D17.1 welder certification plates in all three materials in the vertical position.
