VOB 163 - Career Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG)

This course is designed to enable the student to learn safety, material and equipment setup, and basic techniques for oxy-fuel, gas metal arc (MIG), gas tungsten arc (TIG), and shielded metal arc (Stick) welding. Students will also explore basic metallurgy, welding codes, inspection, and symbols. Students will then advance their skills in the Gas Metal Arc (MIG) process. Emphasis will be placed on the student’s ability to prepare material and perform welding of fillet and groove welds in carbon steel in all positions. Practice is geared towards Structural Welding Code vertical and overhead tests. Topics to be covered include welding safety, cutting operations, operating oxy-fuel and cutting equipment, basic welding symbols and codes, common alloy metallurgy, material and machine setup, welding inspection methods, fillet welds, and groove welds.

Course Objectives:

1. understand and practice safety in all aspects of welding and cutting operations;
2. set-up and operate Oxy-Fuel equipment to perform groove and fillet welds in the flat and horizontal positions;
3. perform cutting of steel, aluminum and stainless steel with Oxy-Fuel and Plasma cutting equipment;
4. perform groove and fillets welds on carbon steel in the flat and horizontal positions with: MIG, TIG, and Stick welding;
5. read and interpret basic welding symbols and understand welding codes;
6. understand the basics of Visual, Dye Penetrant, Mag Particle, Ultrasonic and Radiographic welding inspection methods;
7. understand the metallurgy of common alloys;
8. perform safety inspection of equipment and accessories;
9. set up and prepare material for MIG welding and adjust machine to correct polarity, wire speed and voltage;
10. make fillet and groove welds in all positions on carbon steel material using MIG welding;
11. perform GMAW AWS D6.1 vertical or overhead sheet metal test; and
12. perform FCAW AWS D1.1, Structural Welding Code-Steel welder certification test coupons in 3G & 4G positions on 3/8” plate.
