AHL 312 - Principles of Sports Massage


2.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to enable the students to explore sports assessment and injury
management as it relates to the application of massage therapy. Topics to be covered include
muscle assessment & testing; ethical documentation; indications and contraindications of the
application of therapeutic sports techniques; dysfunctional conditions of the body; and
clinical assessment.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. identify the indications and contraindications for the application of therapeutic massage
therapies to sports related injuries and dysfunctions;
2. conduct physical examinations and apply therapeutic manipulations to assess for injuries
and sports related dysfunctional pattering;
3. demonstrate knowledge of the surface anatomy of the human body by palpating and assessing
soft tissues for dysfunctional movement;
4. identify why joint movement is important for the massage therapist through assessing
joints for normal and abnormal range of movements;
5. recognize principles of biomechanics and kinesiology while applying knowledge to record
assessments, ethical documentation, and treatment plan development; and
6. utilize sound body mechanic movement techniques for the prevention of repetitive injury
to the massage therapist.
