AHL 309 - Spa Bodywork- A Fundamental Approach 6.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to enable students to learn spa bodywork techniques, spa product and
equipment use, as well as related health and sanitation protocols. Topics to be covered
include the application of aromatherapy, body wraps, hydrotherapy, exfoliation, Ayurveda,
and Hot Stone techniques, as well as Pre- and Perinatal massage manipulations and Manual
Lymphatic Drainage techniques. Students will engage in spa-related clinicals where their
application of bodywork techniques will be assessed.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. identify the standard precautions of providing spa techniques, pregnancy massage
manipulations and manual lymphatic drainage in the field of therapeutic massage;
2. determine how the spa bodywork approach impacts special populations and clients with
special needs when providing therapeutic massage;
3. define the benefits and guidelines of providing spa bodywork techniques in spa settings,
to pregnant populations, and persons suffering with lymphatic dysfunctions;
4. utilize sound biomechanical principles & body mechanical movements when applying manual
and mechanical force to the soft tissues of the human body;
5. apply appropriate health, safety and sanitation protocols when utilizing spa equipment
and after spa bodywork therapeutic treatment sessions;
6. determine the appropriate methods of spa bodywork product application and product removal
for the safety of massage therapy clients; and
7. review and apply knowledge of client interviews and ethical documentation as it relates
to spa bodywork therapeutic massage sessions.
