ADS 158 - Career and Employment Readiness


2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to enable the student to identify and enhance employability skills that prepare them to secure employment. Topics to be covered include: workplace values, creating resumes and cover letters, job search strategies, networking through social media, and effective interviewing.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate the skills to conduct a self-directed job search for long-term employment opportunities;
2. develop professional self-management, effective communication, and interpersonal skills;
3. demonstrate the ability to format and customize a professional resume, cover letter, and reference letter;
4. identify transferrable skills that highlight unpaid and non-traditional work
experiences on a resume and in a job interview; identify key words, skills, and employment expectations relevant to a job announcement;
5. identify traditional and non-traditional job search and networking strategies;
6. explain the importance of researching a company in preparation for an interview, and how to identify employer expectations;
7. demonstrate strategies to answer difficult interview questions;
8. articulate work skills and experiences through practice and employer interviews; and
9. demonstrate the ability to apply effective leadership strategies for communication, assuming responsibilities, team building, and decision-making in the workplace.
