AHL 306 - Fundamentals of Pathology for Massage Therapy 5.2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to enable the students to learn the anatomical and physiological
systems of the human body as it relates to the development of common pathological
conditions. Students will explore these pathological components and system dysfunctions as
it relates to the application of massage therapy. Topics to be covered include the
structural, systematic, and physiological effects that manual therapy has on individuals
living with particular pathologies, as well as the anatomical and physiological systems of
the body as they relate to pathological dysfunctions. The development of Cancer-causing
agents in relation to therapeutic massage practice will also be explored. Students will
engage in pathological systems clinicals that mirror working in a medically therapeutic
massage therapy setting.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. identify and define common conditions related to the development of infectious agents in
the human body;
2. assess and develop pain management techniques and apply learned methods in a medical
massage therapeutic hands-on setting;
3. explore how common dysfunctional patterns occur in the human body as it relates to the
practice of massage therapy;
4. identify various treatment options associated with cancer causing agents and explore how
various massage therapy techniques may be applied for therapeutic relief;
5. review and apply knowledge of medical terminology to anatomic and pathological conditions
and patterns of dysfunction; and
6. explore various methods of disease management as it relates to the practice of applying
therapeutic massage within a medical and wellness environment.
