AHL 323 - Phlebotomy Technician II


4.5 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and entry level skills needed to perform venipuncture, specimen collection of other body fluids, and preparation of specimens for testing. Anatomy and physiology of the various systems for specimen collection and safe collecting, processing, handling of specimens, and laboratory operations are presented. Actual practice in lab skills and drawing specimens and laboratory operations occurs during class. Topics to be covered include: universal precautions, infection control, laboratory testing and procedures, venipuncture, capillary puncture, anatomy and physiology, preparing blood samples, and specimen processing.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. identify basic anatomical structures in each body system;
2. apply safety principles and procedures in skin puncture and phlebotomy;
3. identify and describe the venipuncture for the sites of specimen collection;
4. describe the steps in the blood collection technique and order of the draw;
5. implement regulations for operational and quality control procedures;
6. describe the process of specimen handling from delivery to providing results;
7. demonstrate an exposure control plan;
8. demonstrate accepted practices in infection control, isolation, and infection (e.g., hand washing, gowning);
9. list proper techniques to ensure patient safety in a variety of settings; and
10. explain the importance of cultural diversity and age-specific challenges in phlebotomy.
