AHL 322 - Phlebotomy Technician I

This continuing education course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the phlebotomist’s role in ensuring safe and effective healthcare and explore the essential qualities and characteristics of a professional phlebotomist. Topics to be covered include: the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), basic medical terminology, strategies for delivering effective customer service, professionalism, and the responsibilities of phlebotomists.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. define the responsibilities and functions of phlebotomists across various healthcare environments;
2. demonstrate use of the fundamental components of medical terminology including root words, suffixes, prefixes, correct spelling, and accurate pronunciation;
3. match medical terms with their respective definitions;
4. apply knowledge of HIPAA regulations and their implications for patient privacy and confidentiality;
5. articulate the significance of effective communication and exceptional customer service in delivering high-quality phlebotomy services;
6. list strategies for integrating feedback and criticism from supervisors and colleagues to foster both personal and professional growth as a phlebotomist;
7. develop skills to navigate and effectively resolve frequently encountered conflicts in the healthcare setting; and
8. identify common employer expectations for phlebotomists and factors influencing promotion opportunities or termination decisions.
