AHL 217 - Basic Math Skills for Heathcare Workers Online

1 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This class is designed to review math skills that are directly related to math used in allied health courses and in the health care field. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and decimals, converting fractions to decimals and vice versa, ratios, rates, proportions and percentages, and using the metric system for measurements will be reviewed along with how to setup basic algebraic equations to solve health care related problems (e.g. medication dosages).

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. compute properly mathematical expressions using the order of operation;
2. define a fraction and know the different formats of fractions;
3. simplify complex fractions by reducing to lowest equivalent fractions;
4. demonstrate the ability to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers;
5. add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions;
6. write a fraction as decimals;
7. add, subtract, multiply, divide, and round decimals;
8. write fractions and mixed numbers to percent;
9. convert between fractions, decimals, and percent;
10. define the metric system of measurement;
11. enumerate the 4 basic units of measures in the metric system;
12. convert between the English and metric systems of measurement for length or distance, weight, volume (liquid), and temperature scales;
13. define a ratio;
14. define and set-up a proportion;
15. set-up proportions for basic algebraic equations; and 16. solve for the unknown variable in a basic algebraic equation.
