AHL 288 - Certified Nursing Assistant Theory


8.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education ​course is designed to enable the student to develop the skills necessary to apply for Maryland state certification as both a Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA) and to sit for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) certification exam. Nursing Assistants work under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses or Licensed Practical Nurses. Topics to be covered include: assisting with activites of daily living such as grooming, meals, and toileting; performing basic nursing skills such as obtaining patient/client vital signs such as pulse rate or blood pressure; and assisting with restorative care such as range of motion exercises or ambulation.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. perform appropriate delegated tasks;
2. demonstrate the ability to individualize care to meet the needs of the client;
3. demonstrate the proper use of infection control procedures;
4. provide an environment which promotes safety and well-being for clients/patients and team members;
5. demonstrate the ability to assist clients with activities of daily living that ensure nutritional needs are met;
6. demonstrate the ability to obtain, record, and report vital measurements;
7. apply basic observational, recording, and reporting skills;
8. state examples of changes in a client’s/patient’​​s condition that should be reported to the supervising nurse;
9. explain how effective interpersonal relationships are developed;
10. identify ethical and legal issues affecting the work of the CNA and GNA;
11. demonstrate the ability to function as an effective compassionate member of a healthcare team;
12. utilize professional standards of conduct specific to the nursing assistant/geriatric nursing assistant role;
13. demonstrate cultural competency and awareness in the hospital setting;
14. ​complete required documentation for clinical placement and Maryland Board of Nursing application; and
15. demonstrate proficiency in medical terminology.
