AHL 303 - Principles of Chair for Massage Therapy


3.2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to enable the students to learn how to conduct chair massages. Students will follow protocols unique to the application of chair massage and will be able to provide on-site chair massage at the completion of the course. Safety and sanitation considerations will be taken into account, as well as the development of biomechanical techniques to limit injury and muscle strain during application. Topics to be covered
include massage equipment ergonomics; safety and sanitation; indications and contraindications for the application of chair massage; client retention methods for chair massage business; and injury prevention.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. identify the benefits of chair massage and recognize common conditions and pathologies that would benefit from chair massage application;
2. demonstrate professional cleanliness and product sanitizing effectiveness to create a safe and healthy chair massage environment;
3. develop and establish effective protocols for client retention and client referral communications;
4. apply and employ effective massage therapy strokes and manipulations during therapeutic chair massage sessions;
5. utilize sound body mechanic movement techniques for the prevention of repetitive injury to the massage therapist; and
6. recognize and apply researched marketing/ advertising methods to establish a viable therapeutic chair massage business.
