This course is designed to enable the student who is a health care professional or studying a health care profession to learn proper rescue techniques for adults, children, and infants. This course covers both single-rescuer and team basic life support (BLS) skills for application in prehospital and in-facility environments. Topics to be covered include: the signs and symbols of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, risk factors of heart disease, team dynamics, and the skills to perform high-quality CPR. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be issued an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider card valid for two years.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. describe the signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary arrest;
2. demonstrate high quality one-rescuer and two-rescuer CPR for adults, children, and infants;
3. identify the AHA Chain of Survival ;
4. practice proper use of an automated external defibrillation (AED); and
5. demonstrate management of an obstructed airway and effective ventilation using a barrier device.
