AHL 282 - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)


9 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to provide the student the requisite knowledge and theory necessary to perform emergency medical care in a pre-hospital environment at the basic life support level. Topics to be covered include levels of care, patient assessment, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, recognition and treatment of medical and trauma emergencies experiences by patients of all ages.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. apply fundamental knowledge of the EMS system, safety and well-being of the EMT, and medical, legal, and ethical issues to the provision of emergency medical care;
2. describe the essential elements of safe and orderly transportation of the patient to the hospital and the transfer of patient care to the appropriate hospital staff;
3. identify methods for safely preparing, packaging, and moving a patient for transport to a designated medical facility;
4. differentiate assessment techniques and treatments for at-risk patient care populations;
5. describe essential elements for the safe and efficient response to the scene of an emergency; and
6.discuss the correlation between evidence-based medicine and the practice of pre-hospital care for patients.
