AHL 220 - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Refresher 0.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or respond to emergencies in infants and children, such as personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, or critical care units. Students will learn a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children. Topics to be covered include recognizing infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest and specific strategies to both resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. perform high-quality child CPR AED and infant CPR;
2. recognize patients who do and do not require immediate intervention;
3. recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and application of CPR within 10 seconds;
4. apply team dynamics;
5. differentiate between respiratory distress and failure;
6. identify interventions for respiratory distress and failure;
7. differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock;
8. list interventions for the treatment of shock;
9. differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias;
