AHL 248 - Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS) Core Provider 0.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to provide EMS practitioners at all levels with the skills and knowledge to help improve medical outcomes and quality of life for geriatric patients. Topics to be covered include the unique medical, social, environmental, and communications challenges of older adults.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. identify changes with age,
2. perform assessment of older adults,
3. explain pharmacology and medication toxicity,
4. assess psycho-social emergencies,
5. recognize signs of elder abuse,
6. define end-of-life care issues,
7. differentiate between cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies,
8. report trauma,
9. describe neurological emergencies and altered mental status, Mobile integrated healthcare
10. explain special considerations for older adults in disaster response,
11. categorize skin and wound care, and
12. identify medical devices frequently used by older adults.
