AHL 332 - Maryland Orthodontic Expanded Functions Online


4.2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to enable dental assistants to learn expanded orthodontic dental assisting functions as approved by the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners (MBDE) and will prepare students for the Maryland Dental Assisting Expanded Orthodontic Functions Exam (MDO). Topics to be covered include: preparing, fitting, and cementing orthodontic bands; placing and removing archwires; isolating, etching, bonding, and placing brackets.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate the ability to take impressions for study models, diagnostic casts, and intraoral appliances;
2. apply and use fluorides;
3. prepare, fit, and cement orthodontic bands, as well as remove excess cement and check for loose bands;
4. demonstrate use of athletic mouthguards on models;
5. demonstrate the ability to isolate, etch, bond, and place brackets;
6. demonstrate the ability to place and remove archwires;
7. demonstrate knowledge of the edgewise appliance for orthodontic braces;
8. demonstrate the ability to place elastics and ligatures;
9. demonstrate knowledge of oral and dental anatomy and morphology;
10. demonstrate knowledge of other orthodontic appliances such as select headgear;
11. provide patient with oral hygiene education;
12. demonstrate knowledge of tooth movement;
13. demonstrate knowledge of the removal of cemented or bonded orthodontic bands and attachments;
14. demonstrate knowledge of infection control such as use of barrier techniques, knowledge of sterilization procedures, and occupational safety concerns;
15. apply desensitizing agents;
16. apply topical anesthesia; and
17. demonstrate the ability to cure by use of halogen.
