This continuing education course is designed to provide a theatrical interpreting student an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skill in a practicum setting under the supervision and guidance of an experienced mentor in theatre access. Topics to be covered include: the impact of the theatre setting on interpreting demands, advocacy, how to handle ethical dilemmas, and best practices for accurate translation and interpretation.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. discuss the impact of the theatre setting on interpreting demands;
2. demonstrate how to work in a collaborative and professional manner with Deaf and hearing theatre artists;
3. explain how to mitigate the power, privilege, and oppression of the Deaf community and Deaf theatre artists through advocacy and allyship;
4. demonstrate the ability to respond effectively to ethical dilemmas in theatre settings; and
5. provide an accurate translation or interpretation.
