FLA 238 - Theatrical Performance Interpreting


2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to provide instruction for directors of Artistic Sign Language (DASL), as well as deaf and hearing interpreters, on performance interpreting for theatre. Topics to be covered include: an introduction to theatre; the role of the director of Artistic Sign Language; the purpose of interpreters in theatre; the business and ethics of interpreting; script analysis and translation; hands-on interpreting practice; and special topics that include tactile ASL, protactile, close vision, voice acting, and production interpreting.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. describe at least 3 theatre settings and roles;
2. describe the theatre interpreting team and their role;
3. identify the competencies needed for interpreting a theatrical performance;
4. describe the theatre interpreting process;
5. describe the theatre interpreting booking process;
6. identify and describe at least 3 ethical dilemmas in theatrical interpreting settings;
7. analyze a script;
8. construct an interpretation with a theatrical interpreting team; and
9. produce an interpretation of a theatrical performance.
