FLA 242 - Protactile Intensive


1 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to prepare interpreting students and interpreters to work with DeafBlind individuals who utilize Protactile language. Students will practice hands-on use of Protactile language with deafblind consumers and reflect on their experiences. Topics to be covered include the evolution of the protractile movement and principles of using it when interpreting for DeafBlind consumers.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. describe Protactile language and cultural implication of its use;
2. identify the difference between tactile, haptics and protactile communication methods;
3. identify techniques for backchanneling and conveying visual information;
4. demonstrate ability to interpret into Protactile language through hands-on experiences; and
5. demonstrate ability to incorporate environmental information using existing interpreting models to support language, communication and mutual attention.
