FLA 240 - DeafBlind Interpreting Applied 2.25 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to continue to prepare interpreting students and interpreters to work with DeafBlind individuals. Students will practice adaptative interpreting skills related to close-vision, tactile, and protactile methods. Topics to be covered include interpreting strategies based on vision abilities, communication, guiding skills, and different etiologies of deaf-blindness with DeafBlind individuals.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Utilize touch for communication, information, and expressions of emotions ;
2. Demonstrate turn-taking exchange for starting, maintain and ending interactions when DeafBlind interpreting ;
3. Identify the indicators of a DeafBlind individual’s processing time ;
4. Demonstrate ability to incorporate environmental information using existing interpreting models to support language, communication and mutual attention ;
5. Apply the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf’s Code of Professional Conducts/Ethics and Standard Practice Paper on DeafBlind Interpreting ; and
6. Demonstrate successful DeafBlind interpreting using Mirroring (copy-sign), and Environmental Cues .
