VOB 101 - Certified Residential Interior Designer Part 1


6 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to prepare the student for a career as a residential interior designer and to prepare the student for the Certified Residential Interior Designer Education (R.I.D.E.) exam. Topics to be covered include the fundamentals and ethical practices involved in becoming a residential interior designer; the basics of good design; design styles and movements; materials that interior designers use; development of a concept portfolio; and design concept for a family room.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. explain design basics;
2. create a design concept and floor plan;
3. describe space planning;
4. discuss the history of styles and furnishings from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages;
5. discuss the history of styles and furnishings from the Renaissance to the 20th century;
6. discuss the history of styles and furnishings of modernism;
7. explain non-European influences and furniture styles on interior design;
8. describe various materials used in residential interior design;
9. describe the uses of color in designing residential interiors;
10. describe the uses of textiles in designing residential interiors;
11. explain the uses of accents and accessories in designing residential interiors;
12. list the steps required to work as a residential interior designer and start your own design business;
13. list residential interior design industry regulations;
14. create a portfolio; and
15. complete the Residential Interior Designer Education exam.
