AUT 022 - Repairing Automotive Brake Systems


6.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to introduce students to diagnosis and repair of automotive brake systems and components. Topics to be covered include: inspection, disassembly, overhaul, and repair of hydraulic systems, disc brake systems, drum brake systems, power brake systems, anti-lock brake systems, and associated repairs.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate the ability to remove, bench bleed, and replace a master cylinder;
2. demonstrate the ability to remove, clean, inspect, and measure brake drums and service or replace as needed using proper safety procedures;
3. demonstrate the ability to mount brake drum on lathe and machine braking surface;
4. demonstrate the ability to mount brake rotor on lathe and machine braking surface;
5. demonstrate the ability to remove, clean, and inspect brake shoes, including all related brake hardware, lubricate where necessary and reassemble;
6. demonstrate the ability to install wheels, including properly torquing the lug nuts, making final checks, and adjustments;
7. demonstrate the ability to remove, clean, and inspect brake pads and retaining hardware to determine needed service;
8. demonstrate the ability to remove and replace a rotor;
9. demonstrate the ability to diagnose, inspect, and repair anti-lock brake systems; and
10. perform all required Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation tasks from the ASE master course list.
