This course is designed to familiarize the student with special needs with the veterinary assistant’s role in patient care, therapy, euthanasia, anesthesia, perioperative care, and emergency care. Topics to be covered include animal nutrition, husbandry, patient care, medication administration, therapeutic techniques, euthanasia, anesthesia, surgery, emergency care, first aid and CPR.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. describe the five freedoms of animal welfare;
2. describe the five patient rights and the basic needs of veterinary patients;
3. describe and demonstrate patient signalment and its importance;
4. identify nutritional needs of patients;
5. demonstrate an understanding of euthanasia procedures and the stages of grief;
6. demonstrate and describe grooming techniques used in the veterinary setting;
7. identify vital signs;
8. describe the importance of dental hygiene and care;
9. demonstrate and describe proper procedures for medicating patients;
10. properly identify and describe anesthesia equipment and procedures;
11. demonstrate an understanding of fluid therapy and various therapeutic techniques;
12. properly identify common medical and surgical instruments;
13. define and describe aseptic techniques;
14. properly identify and describe sterilization and cleaning of tools;
15. describe the veterinary assistant’s role in perioperative nursing care;
16. recognize emergencies, define and explain triage; and
17. demonstrate and describe basic veterinary first aid and the RECOVER method for veterinary CPR.
