ADS 229 - English 4 Literacy Refresher


0.9 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to enable students with disabilities to review and reinforce literacy skills in between semesters. Topics to be covered include: examining analytical paragraphs, discussing strategies for nonfiction works, critiquing character development in nonfiction works, and discussing the basic elements of plot structure.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. examine the components and process of crafting an analytical paragraph;
2. discuss the genre of nonfiction, including strategies for reading nonfiction and how vocabulary and author’s intention are used in nonfiction;
3. critique a work of nonfiction, discussing the development of character, including point of view, relationships, and internal motivations; and
4. examine and discuss the basic elements of plot structure (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, climax, falling action, and resolution).
