ADS 090 - Math 3: Pre-Algebra 4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to introduce the student with intellectual and/or developmental disability to pre-algebraic mathematical concepts and prepare the student for beginning algebra. Topics to be covered include categorizing numbers into their number systems; determining and plotting points on a number line; using integers, roots, exponents, and rational numbers; simplifying fractions; raising fractions to a power; order of operations; algebraic vocabulary; and simplifying single variable expressions.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. describe and categorize numbers into their number systems;
2. determine the absolute value points on a number line;
3. demonstrate the ability to plot values on a number line;
4. perform whole number operations using integers;
5. define of roots and exponents;
6. recognize and perform operations using rational numbers;
7. define fractions, including simplifying, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions;
8. define fractions raised to a power;
9. define the order of operations (PEDMAS);
10. develop and use a vocabulary of algebraic terms;
11. evaluate and simplify algebraic expressions with a single variable;
12. demonstrate the ability to simplify algebraic expressions using commutative, associative, and distributive properties; and
13. demonstrate the ability to simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms.
