ADS 201 - Math 1 - Whole Number Operations 4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This continuing education course is designed for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to develop their basic mathematical skills using whole numbers with real world applications. Topics to be covered include: addition and subtraction of whole numbers to the thousands, multiplication and division of whole numbers, using a calculator to check computations, the commutative property of addition and multiplication, using whole number operations in the purchase of goods, and an introduction to the concept of greater than and less than.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. demonstrate the ability to add whole numbers to the thousands using regrouping;
2. demonstrate the ability to subtract whole numbers to the thousands using regrouping, including numbers with 0s;
3. demonstrate the ability to multiply whole numbers using manipulatives and real life scenarios;
4. demonstrate the ability to convert multiplication problems into repeated addition;
5. demonstrate the ability to check the computation of whole number operations using a calculator;
6. demonstrate that division is part of a whole (e.g., 60 seconds equal 1 minute, 4 quarters equal 1 dollar, 4 1/4 cups equal a whole cup);
7. demonstrate the real world application of division by distributing and/or collecting supplies such as paper, pencils, and candy;
8. demonstrate the commutative property in addition and multiplication, using manipulatives such as number lines, repeated addition, building blocks, multiplication tables, and base ten blocks;
9. identify key words in whole number word problems, such as less, greater than, less than, spend, subtract, add, equals, left, etc.;
10. demonstrate the use of whole number operations in purchasing goods, including calculating totals and making change in the classroom and in real life settings; and
11. identify when a number is greater than or less than another number.
