CHA 299 - English 4 Literacy 4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to enable the student with developmental and other disabilities to read and understand non-fiction texts, to respond critically to those texts, and to increase working vocabulary. Topics to be covered include critiquing an analytical paragraph, strategies for reading a work of non-fiction, poetry, literary devices, and expanding vocabulary through use of roots and affixes, evaluating sources in bibliographies and works cited.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. identify and critique an influential speech that resulted in reform or societal change in the United States;
2. examine the components and process of crafting an analytical paragraph;
3. discuss the genre of nonfiction, including strategies for reading nonfiction and how vocabulary and author’s intention are used in nonfiction;
4. critique a work of non-fiction discussing the development of character including point of view, relationships, and internal motivations;
5. identify the sources in a bibliography and works cited page and evaluate their credibility and validity to support the author’s argument”;
6. analyze the development of themes through specific details including the character’s actions, thoughts and words in excerpts of literary works;
7. examine and discuss the basic elements of plot structure (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution);
8. explore the elements of poetry, including structure, word choice, literary devices, and sensory details; and
9. expand vocabulary through the study of roots and affixes and learn how to utilize reference materials to enhance their understanding of word meanings.
