This course is designed to enable the student who is disabled to learn about essay writing, including research, forming, supporting and defending an argument, and editing for grammar and language mechanics. Topics to be covered include the difference between fact and opinion, satire, and developing and supporting a thesis.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. compose a paragraph that includes a clear topic sentence with related supporting details;
2. demonstrate an understanding of the writing process by brainstorming ideas, drafting a clear outline before writing, editing the first draft according to the outline, and using a proofreading checklist to revise;
3. demonstrate editing techniques using predetermined checklists and rubrics to participate in peer review;
4. compose essays that include a thesis statement, two to three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph;
5. demonstrate the ability to write works of fiction, such as poems and short stories;
6. research credible sources and use appropriate evidence to support topics and arguments; and
7. cite credible sources in a works cited page.
