ADS 082 - English 3 - Literacy


4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to enable the student who is disabled to read and understand complex texts and to respond critically to those texts. Topics to be covered include elements of plot, identifying figurative language, strategies for pre-reading, identifying abstract ideas in texts, and active and critical reading.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. identify and critique an argument made in a nonfiction text and analyze an author’s commentary;
2. compose a multi-paragraph reflection on an assigned fiction text;
3. critique a work of fiction discussing the development of character including point of view, relationships, and internal motivations;
4. cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly, as well as inferences drawn from the text;
5. demonstrate the ability to track and examine significant details of character and plot development, repeated words, ideas, and/or symbols through a text;
6. examine and discuss the basic elements of plot structure (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution);
7. demonstrate an understanding of figurative language, literary devices, and connotation, including simile, metaphor, foreshadow, and allusion;
8. compare and contrast a written story, drama, or poem to its audio, filmed, staged, or multimedia version; and
9. use context clues and dictionary definitions to determine the meaning of vocabulary found in an assigned text.
