ADS 081 - English 2 - Communications


4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to enable the student who has a disability to learn to write in multiple formats using correct grammar and mechanics and to create and give a two-minute speech. Topics to be covered include using the writing process, persuasive writing, informational writing, creative writing, nonfiction prose, and delivering a brief speech.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. compose a paragraph of five to seven sentences, including a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion, on an assigned theme or topic;
2. research, develop, and deliver a two-minute information or persuasive speech on an assigned topic;
3. evaluate an informational or persuasive speech using a rubric that includes the following categories: time, content, flow, information, visuals, and persuasive techniques;
4. write an opinion piece on a topic or text, supporting a point of view with clear reasons and information;
5. identify and demonstrate parts of speech, punctuation, the four types of sentences, simple and compound sentences, and sentence structure; and
6. compose a poem, dialogue, and/or short work of fiction.
