This course is designed to enable the student who has a disability to improve comprehension of print media, increase working vocabulary, and develop and improve basic reading strategies. Topics to be covered include identifying the main idea and supporting details of a literary work of fiction, developing strategies for comprehension, applying analytic techniques to written passages, and developing a wider vocabulary, including discerning meaning from context.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. identify the main idea and supporting details of print media by citing specific details and examples from an assigned text;
2. demonstrate the ability to confirm, refute and/or make predictions about an assigned text;
3. demonstrate the ability to summarize and determine the theme of a story using details from an assigned text;
4. demonstrate the ability to summarize and determine the theme of a drama or poem using details from the assigned text;
5. determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in an assigned text, including figurative language such as metaphors, similes, personification, alliteration, and onomatopoeia;
6. compare and contrast the details of an assigned text to a related multimedia representation;
7. compose an opinion or responsive essay on an assigned text;
8. sequence and demonstrate understanding of events and concepts in an assigned nonfiction text; and
9. participate in a group discussion, e.g., Socratic Seminar or Fishbowl, on an assigned editorial text.
