This continuing education course is designed to enable the student with developmental and other disabilities to compose paragraphs with proper grammar rules and subject/verb agreement. Topics to be covered include: implementing steps of the writing process, exploring the different types of sentences, demonstrating the four types of writing formats, researching topics, and preparing and delivering a presentation to the class.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. compose a paragraph of five sentences, including a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion on an assigned topic;
2. review and apply grammar rules, such as capitalization and punctuation, as well as demonstrate subject/verb agreement;
3. evaluate and incorporate the four types of sentences (declarative, exclamatory, imperative, and interrogatory) in writing;
4. compare and contrast the four main types of writing (narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and expository);
5. identify and demonstrate the writing process (pre-writing, research, drafting, revising, and editing) on a chosen or assigned topic;
6. research an assigned topic and prepare a presentation independently or in groups using Google Slides or PowerPoint; and
7. compose a free verse, haiku, or original poem to present to the class.
