ADS 221 - English 1.5 - Literacy


4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to enable the student with developmental and other disabilities to apply comprehension skills with written material, increase vocabulary development, and improve reading strategies. Topics to be covered include: the main idea and supporting details; theme and the five components of a story; summarizing passages; and identifying, sequencing, comparing, and contrasting details in passages.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. identify the main idea and supporting details by citing specific details and examples for an assigned text;
2. apply fluency skills to improve fluency rate when orally reading aloud;
3. determine the theme of a story using details from an assigned text;
4. compare and contrast details of short passages;
5. determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in an assigned text, including similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia;
6. explain the five components of a story (characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution) using a story map and/or story elements organizer;
7. identify and explain the five components of a story for the assigned text (characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution);
8. demonstrate the ability to summarize and sequence the events of short passages, chapters
of the assigned text, and entire text; and
9. discuss an assigned text within a group setting.
