ADS 079 - English 1 - Communications 4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to enable the student with a disability to write and deliver a short work in multiple formats, using correct grammar, mechanics, and paragraph structure. Topics to be covered include pre-writing strategies, paragraph writing, writing poems and prose, writing and delivering presentations in various media formats, and using the writing process.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. identify and use parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, and conjunctions;
2. demonstrate knowledge of basic grammar rules, such as capitalization and punctuation to write a complete sentence;
3. demonstrate the ability to use pre-writing strategies, such as brainstorming, listing, concept webs, graphic organizers, etc.;
4. demonstrate the ability to use pre-writing content to write a short paragraph;
5. develop a five-sentence paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and conclusion, in which the student is given sentence starters, a familiar topic, and graphic organizers;
6. research an assigned topic and prepare a presentation independently or in groups in one of the following formats: oral presentation with notes, slideshow or PowerPoint, storyboard with captions, or video with notes;
7. develop an original poem independently or in groups, that conveys an opinion or fact in free verse, haiku, song form, or with a clear rhyme scheme.
