This course is designed to enable the student with a disability to increase capacity to read basic words, signs, instructions and short works of fiction, nonfiction, and prose. Topics to be covered include phonemic awareness, building a sight word vocabulary, using context clues, and story elements.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. demonstrate the ability to build a sight word vocabulary that includes words found on signs, menus, product labels, and nutrition labels;
2. demonstrate the ability to build a sight word vocabulary containing words found in the classroom environment, basic computer instructions, and health terminology;
3. demonstrate comprehension and use of sight word vocabulary with real world applications;
4. identify the main idea and supporting details of a short fiction passage or poem;
5. identify relevant details in a short nonfiction passage from sources such as biographies, autobiographies, historical events, and science-themed articles;
6. demonstrate an understanding of the five components of a story: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution; and
7. summarize and sequence the events of a short passage, poem, image or video.
