ADS 073 - Reading Intensive 1 4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to enable students with disabilities to read with phonemic awareness. Topics include decoding, phonetic rules, letter-sound relationships, contractions, compound words, fluency and accuracy, recognizing and self-correcting miscues, and applying concepts to basic writing tasks.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. recognize the sounds of each letter of the alphabet;
2. identify the letters of the alphabet;
3. identify the short and long vowel sounds;
4. demonstrate the ability to read and identify phonetic rules in an assigned text;
5. recognize and decode words using letter sound associations and phonetic patterns (CVC, CVCe, CVVC);
6. demonstrate understanding of r-controlled words;
7. recognize and decode using word patterns or clusters of letters that occur frequently together, such as blends, diphthongs, and digraphs;
8. recognize words with silent letters such as “knew” and “through;”
9. identify that there can be different letter sequences that make the same sound (e.g., ow, ou, oo, and ew);
10. apply understanding of contractions and compound words;
11. demonstrate the ability to use a table of contents, a glossary, and a dictionary;
12. apply fluency and accuracy when reading aloud modified age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction texts;
13. recognize miscues that interfere with meaning and use strategies for self-correction; and
14. apply understanding of letter sound relationships and rules to common writing tasks such as (emails, text messages, and notes).
