CHA 287 - Introduction to Reading


4.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This continuing education course is designed to enable students with disabilities to identify and prepare to read with phonetic awareness. Topics to be covered include: prereading decoding skills, phonetic awareness, letter-sounds and relationships, distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds in words, and exploring using pre-primer and primer sight words to build vocabulary.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. recognize letters of the alphabet;
2. identify letters as consonants and vowels;
3. recognize sounds of each letter of the alphabet;
4. identify pre-primer sight words;
5. identify primer sight words;
6. identify short and long vowel sounds;
7. identify pictures and words with short vowel sounds;
8. identify pictures and words with long vowel sounds;
9. demonstrate the ability to blend CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words; and
10. create short vowel rhyming patterns with CVC words such as -at = cat, mat, sat.
