ADS 190 - Professional Development Support for Pre-Apprenticeship 2.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).
This course is designed to enhance student academic and career skills to be successful in completing a pre-apprenticeship program. Topics to be covered include learning styles, note taking and study tips, test taking strategies and overcoming test anxiety, creating resumes and cover letters, job searching strategies, workplace etiquette, and interviewing effectively.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. demonstrate an ability to manage email, calendars using various software and internetbased program;
2. identify transferable skills that highlight unpaid and nontraditional work experiences (i.e. volunteer or internship) on a resume and in a job interview;
3. customize a professional resume, cover letter, and reference letter for employment using appropriate formatting;
4. identify learning styles;
5. practice new learning techniques to improve academic success;
6. explain the importance of good study habits to reinforce learning;
7. identify solutions and practice strategies for workplace conflict management;
8. identify effective communication skills, and approaches to diffuse workplace conflict;
9. demonstrate strategies to answer difficult interview questions; and
10. articulate work skills and experiences through practice and employer interviews.
