This course is designed to enable the student to learn to continue developing English language skills and extend civics concepts to civic engagement. Topics to be covered include more complex reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation along with civic engagement.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. recognize/respond to idiomatic expressions in familiar situations;
2. employ discussion strategies;
3. distinguish between formal and informal language/register;
4. demonstrate the ability to listen/read to identify main points and take notes;
5. identify and use transition words in speaking and writing;
6. recognize organization patterns and use them to write in specific genre;
7. use revising and editing strategies in writing;
8. identify and appropriately use gerunds, infinitives, and phrasal verbs;
9. demonstrate the ability to present on U.S. Civics topics; and
10. demonstrate the ability to extend understanding of U.S. Civics concepts to civic engagement.
